Vivek Shokeen packs off Uppal

Vivek Shokeen won the battle of ages as he vanquished seasoned Vishal Uppal 6-1, 6-1 in the second round of the USD 15,000 ITF Futures men's tennis event in New Delhi on Wednesday.

Indian favourite and third seed Karan Rastogi romped to a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Amir Weintraub of Israel.

Indian-American teenager Vijay Paul's sparkling run came to an end with a straight-set loss to seventh seed Sunil Kumar Sipaeya.

Eighteen-year old Vijay, son of former Indian player of  same name, had come through three qualifying rounds into the main draw.

And the subcontinent heat seemed to take a toll on the Pittsburg-based lad as he went down 6-3, 6-1 to Sipaeya.

Top seed Ghanian Henry Adjei-Darko needed an hour and 51 minutes to put out Mustafa Ghouse 7-5, 6-2.

Pakistani wild card Aqeel Khan, who had knocked out second seed Alexey Kedriouk in the opening round, continued to cruise at the expense of qualifier Sriram Balaji, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1.

Vinod Sridhar faded out after some initial resistance against Dmitri Makeyev of Uzbekistan 7-5, 6-1.

Two other Indians to bow out were Navdeep Singh, a 6-0, 7-5 loser to Nick Monroe of the USA, and Aditya Madkekar, who lasted a minute more than an hour in a 6-1, 6-1 loss to Japan's Yaoki Ishii.
