Akhil Kumar out-pointed and outclassed Mauritian Louis Richard Bruno Julie of in the 54 kg category bantamweight final of the boxing competition at the Commonwealth Games on Saturday night.
The Bhiwani-born boxer, who turns 27 on Monday, won the fight 20-12, despite a late fightback from his Mauritian opponent.
The other two Indian finalists in the competition, Harpreet Singh (91 kg) and Mahimal Vijender (69 kg) lost in the final. They go back home with a silver each.
Earlier two other boxers, Varghese Johnson (Over 91 kg) and Jitender Kumar (51 kg) won bronze medals.
India's haul from boxing competition is one gold, two silver and two bronze, their best from the sport at any Commonwealth Games.
Sharath Achanta Kamal , 23, entered the men's singles table tennis final, when he won his semi-final in four straight games.
Last week, Sharath helped India win a historic gold medal in the team event. He beat Nigerian Segun Toriola, who came to the Games as the defending champion.
Sharath became the first Indian to make the final of the Commonwealth Games. In an aggressive display Sharath won 11-6, 15-13, 11-8 and 11-3 in just over 30 minutes.
In the final, he will run into the Sweden-based William Henzel of Australia, who lost to India's Soumyadeep Roy in the team event's first singles.
Defending champions, the Indian women's hockey finished with a creditable silver medal. They went down fighting to hosts Australia 0-1 in the final.
The Australians are the No. 1 team in the world. The winning goal came in the 62nd minutes when a great cross Sarah Taylor was deflected in by a Australian skipper Nicole Hudson.
The Indian 4x400m women's relay team of Rajwinder Kaur, Chitra Soman, Manjit Kaur and Pinki Parmanik capitalised on a dropped baton by the favourites, Jamacia, and came into the third sport behind England and Australia. But with England also disqualified, India were elevated to silver and Australia got the gold. Nigeria were third and Jamaica fourth.
Chetan Anand gave India a bronze medal beating England's Aamir Ghaffar in three games to win the bronze in the men's badminton competition of the Commonwealth games. Anand won 21-17, 18-21, 21-13 in 46 minutes. This was second bronze medal for Indian in Badminton, having earlier won one in the mixed team event.
In shooting, pistol problems stopped Samaresh Jung's great run at the Games. The 36-year-old finished without a medal for the first time in eight events. He was ninth, after his pistol failed to fire twice. He did win five gold, one silver and one bronze. It was the first day in last 10 that shooting failed to bring in medals.
"I didn't know about the record (before I came) and I didn't come for the record. I just wanted to get eight medals," said Jung later.
He got seven: five gold, one silver and one bronze.
"I was having trouble with the pistol from the very start, but you get time in the 150 sec to get the things right, but there is hardly any time in 20-second and ten-second rounds and when I got stuck in 20 and 10 second rounds I just could do nothing."
