Paes and Russian Maria Kirilenko shrugged off a patchy display to beat America's Mike Bryan [ Images ] and Meghann Shaughnessy 6-3, 1-6, 6-2.

On the other hand, Sania and Australian Paul Hanley [ Images ] staged a late recovery but it was not enough to prevent a 0-6, 4-6 defeat to another US combination, Martina Navratilova and Bob Bryan.

Paes and Kirilenko face the French pairing of Severine Bremond and Marc Gicquel in the second round.
