Chelsea have agreed to sell defender Asier del Horno to Valencia, the English champions said on their website on Friday.
The Spanish international left back has travelled to Valencia to negotiate personal terms.
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has decided to trim his squad for the forthcoming season with Icelandic forward Eidur Gudjohnsen already departed for Barcelona.
Del Horno joined Chelsea on a three-year contract from Athletic Bilbao in June 2005 for 12 million euros ($15.17 million). He made 32 appearances for the club, but failed to live up to expectations.
The 25-year-old defender hit the headlines when he was sent off for a wild challenge on Barcelona forward Lionel Messi during Chelsea's 2-1 defeat at Stamford Bridge in the Champions League first knockout round in February.
He was selected as part of the Spain squad for the World Cup but had to withdraw at the last minute after suffering a recurrence of an Achilles tendon problem.
Valencia, who have already signed striker Fernando Morientes from Liverpool, finished third in the Spanish Primera Liga last season.
