Exuding confidence, East Bengal's new Brazilian coach Carlos Roberto Da Pereira asserted on Friday that he will strive to make the club national champions and meet the expectations of its fans.
Addressing his maiden media meet hours after landing in Kolkata, the 60-year-old Pereira described the assignment as a 'new challenge'.
"I know India is a great country, a country of rich heritage and history. That's the reason I came here," said the Brazilian, who comes with vast experience in coaching.
Beginning his coaching career in 1970 with Brazil's Madumira Football Club, Pereira has coached Vasco da Gama and various other clubs in the Middle East, including leading outfits of Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, and was also in charge of the Singapore national team between 1996 and 1998.
"Honestly speaking, I don't know much about Indian football. I only got to see some Indian footballers while coaching in UAE and Qatar," he said.
Pereira, who has been given a one-year contract by East Bengal, sought cooperation from the coaching staff, officials and fans.
"Alone I can't do anything. It's all about team effort. If we work together, I think we can meet the expectations of the fans. Obviously, it's to make East Bengal national champions."
Pereira said he prefers the 4-4-2 system, but the formation he would employ would depend on the players' aptitude.
"If I can get the best results by playing 3-5-2, I don't have any problem."
