Sporting Clube de Goa edged past Salgaocar by a solitary goal win to move to the second spot in the 10th ONGC National Football League, played at Nehru stadium on Saturday at Fatorda.
Sporting, who have collected nine points from five matches, climbed to second spot. With the second successive defeat, Salgaocar have only four points from four matches.
Salgaocar's Samson Singh was declared the Man of the Match.
Sporting Clube de Goa took an early lead -- in the second minute -- after they earned a free kick on the left. Salgaocar custodian Sangram Mukerjee reacted late to clear the Rajesh Meetei kick from entering the net. Sangram, who got his leg injured after hitting the post in the process, was replaced by Arijit Sengupta.
Unraffled by the early set back, Salgaocar made inroads into the opposition defence with Brazilian Fabio Passo controlling the midfield along with countrymate Bruno de Oliveira.
Salgaocar's Jyothi Kumar send a couple of dangerous crosses but Sporting defence somehow managed to keep the ball out of danger in the first half.
First twenty minutes of the second half was confined to midfield, with Salgaocar pressing for the equaliser, at the same time lacking the finishing touch.
Ashim Biswas, who came in place of Jyothi Kumar, came close to scoring twice but first keeper Feliz D'Souza made an acrobatic save and later his header sailed over the bar narrowly.
