Sher-e-Jalandhar registered a much needed win over formidable Chandigarh Dynamos beating the home team by a solitary goal in the Premier Hockey League in Chandigarh on Saturday night.
The Shers captain Gagan Ajit Singh came good in the first quarter taking a clean hit of the first of the two penalty corners, which his team earned.
The win tonight, their second in the current campaign, kept them in the reckoning with six points from five matches.
This was the second successive defeat for the Dynamos after going down to defending champions Hyderabad Sultans yesterday. But they are still sitting pretty with nine points from five matches.
Desperate to make a comeback, the Shers went on the attack from the start, often cashing in on the opponents' mis-passing to build up pressure.
After conceding early in the match, the Dynamos were under pressure to equalise but failed to capitalise on the opportunities that came their way.
They earned three back-to-back penalty corners in the fifth minute of the third quarter but could not score from any of them.
The Shers too could have increased their lead, but missed at least two scoring chances, their captain being guilty on one occasion hitting a wild one from a neat pass.
Earlier during the second quarter, the Dynamos could not cash in on the absence of Baljit Singh Saini in the Shers line-up for a few minutes, after he was shown a yellow card for a bad tackle.
The Dynamos fortunes also took a blow as Jugraj Singh was ruled out from today's match after he suffered a severe blow deflecting a ball struck by Sultans' drag-flicker Didar Singh on to his face yesterday.
Jugraj, who is making a comeback after surviving a car crash about two years back, had to be hospitalised with 30 stitches.
