Portugal keeper Carlos Gomes dies

Ex-Sporting and Portugal goalkeeper Carlos Gomes has died at the age of 73, the Lisbon club said on Monday.

Gomes enjoyed the distinction of playing in the first match of the European Cup when Sporting drew 3-3 with Partizan Belgrade at the National Stadium in Lisbon on September 4 1955.

Partizan won the second leg 5-2 in Belgrade the following month to record an 8-5 aggregate victory.

Gomes, who also played in Spain and Morocco, died after a long illness.

He won 18 caps for Portugal.
