McLaren's Juan Pablo Montoya, returning to Formula One after missing two races due to injury, crashed heavily in practice for the Spanish Grand Prix on Friday.
The Colombian clambered from his wrecked car after crashing at turn nine some 30 seconds from the end of the day's second session.
He appeared to be suffering some pain in his left arm as he climbed over the tyre wall.
Montoya missed the Bahrain and San Marino Grands Prix after suffering a hairline fracture of his shoulder while playing tennis at the end of March.
He was replaced in Bahrain by Spaniard Pedro de la Rosa, the test driver who topped the times for McLaren in both of Friday's hour-long sessions at his home circuit.
