The Jharkhand government on Sunday handed over a cheque of Rs five lakh to international archer Jhanu Hansda for her recent world-record feat.
Minister of Home, Sport and Youth Affairs Sudesh Mahato handed over the cheque to Hansda at the prize distribution ceremony of 3rd state inter-school archery championship in Jamshedpur.
The state government had announced the award for Hansda after she created a world record at the 1st National Ranking Archery Tournament at Hyderabad recently.
Mahato also handed over cheques of Rs five lakh each to the parents of Mamata Kumari and Sararika Chakroborty, sports persons who were killed in the tsunami waves that hit the Southern states of the country on December 26 last.
Both the players had gone to participate in the inter-university meet in Chennai, when the incident took place.
Talking to newsmen, Mahato said funds would not be a factor for promoting sports in Jharkhand.
He said Jharkhand government had initiated steps to organise the 2007 National Games and formed new committees for the purpose.
