India bag two golds in Asian GP

Navpreet Singh came up with his best effort on foreign soil to claim the top honours in Shot Put as Indian athletes bagged two gold, two silver and three bronze medals in the Asian Grand Prix in Sidoarja, Indonesia on Saturday.

Navpreet heaved the 7.26 kg iron ball to a distance of 19.60 meter to win the top place and a cash award of USD 2,500.

In the men's Long Jump event Maha Singh bagged the second gold for India in a keenly contested competition, according to information received in New Delhi.

With his best performance outside India, Navpreet produced five throws beyond the 19m mark -- 18.96m, 19.29m 19.38m 19.19m 19.48m 19.19m and 19.60m.

Navpreet's career best was 19.93m set up at the Inter State Athletic Meet at Chennai in July last year.

Chinese thrower Zhang Qi, who has a personal best of 19.40m, did 19.28m to finish second while India's Ranvijay finished third with a throw of 18.38m.

The pre-competition favourite Song Jian of China, with a personal best of 7.92m, led the first two rounds of the competition with 7.44m.

Maha Singh fouled the first three attempts before moving to the second position with a jump of 7.57m.

In last two jumps, he came up with efforts of 7.89m and 7.89m to clinch the title.

India also bagged silver and a bronze medal in women's Discus throw.

Krishna Punia threw 55.04m for a silver while more experienced Harwant Kaur finished third with an attempt of 54.79m.

The other Indian athletes who performed well were S Geetha (Silver) and Satbir Singh (Bronze).

Geetha ran a thrilling neck-to-neck race in the last 200m with Roslanova Tatyana of Kazakstan but at the end it was Tatyana who won in 59.79 sec.

Geetha clocked a career best 52.24s.
