Playing on his favourite surface, he beat Japanese qualifier Toshihide Matsui 6-4, 7-6 (4) in the first round and will next face top seed Bjorn Phau of Germany [ Images ] on Wednesday.

In doubles, Mankad and Mustafa Ghouse beat the US-Canadian pair Pierre-Ludovic Duclos and Lesley Joseph 7-5, 6-4 to enter the quarterfinal.

Rohan Bopanna [ Images ] of India and Matsui also entered the doubles quarterfinal with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Andrew Piotrowski and Alex Reichel.

Bopanna has been drawn against Alexander Popp of Germany for his singles first round later on Tuesday.
