Sehwag's bat auctioned to raise funds

The global sports management group, IMG chipped in with Rs.4.35 lakh rounding off to a total amount of Rs 10 lakh from the auction of impediments and autographed photos of sportspersons held at Chennai on Sunday to raise funds for tsunami victims in Chennai.

The auction, held in conjunction with the ATP Tour Chennai Open Tennis championship starting at Chennai on Monday, was well attended. The offer of former Davis Cup captain, Vijay Amritraj, fetched the highest amount of Rs one lakh.

Amritraj's offer was for two-centre court tickets for a week for the 2005 Wimbledon championship with some fringe benefits like lunch.

The second best bid was by Ravi Krishnan, Managing Director, IMG, South Asia, who bought the autographed photograph of golfer Tiger Woods for Rs 75,000.

N Sankar, Chairman, Chemplast and Vice President, All India Tennis Federation paid Rs.70,000 for Virender Sehwag's bat with which he scored 309 runs against Pakistan in April 2004.

Anil Kumble's t-shirt which he wore while claiming his 434th wicket was sold for Rs 30,000. Vijay Amritraj's wife succeeded in her bid of Rs.25,000 for naming two celebrities to play against Mahesh Bhupathi and Jonas Bjorksman.

The other items auctioned included a copy of Sports Illustrated signed by Maria Sharapova, a Fila cap signed by Jennifer Capriati, a Wilson racket signed by Venus Williams, a cap signed by golfer Vijay Singh, autographed photographs of Bjorn Borg and Chris Evert and tiger skin hats signed by Annika Sorenstam, Jesper Parnevik, Lam Chih Bing and Retief Goosen.
