Jalandhar outfits Border Security Force and Corps of Signals entered the second round in the 43rd Bombay Gold Cup hockey tournament in contrasting fashion at the Mahindra stadium in Mumbai on Tueasday.
Former champions BSF, coming to the tournament after winning the Beighton Cup in Kolkata, proved a bit too experienced for young and speedy Sports Authority of India, Mumbai, winning 3-2.
Forwards Ranjit Singh (22nd minute), Marinus Lakra (39th) and full-back Mangru Tirkey (44th, penalty-corner) found the target for BSF, who led 1-0 at half-time.
Both the goals by SAI were eye-catching ones and came from the sticks of forward Naveet Swarnakar, a forward diving effort in the 43rd minute, and winger Atiq-Ur-Rehman, who scooped the ball into the goal two minutes from close.
Earlier, Signals 'stroked out' Chennai's Integral Coach Factory (ICF) 4-3 via sudden-death after the teams were tied goalless at the end of regulation time and 3-3 at the end of the first set of five strokes each.
The sudden-death goal for the army team was scored by Ghanshyam Das after Rajendra Prasath was foiled by Signals custodian Imran Khan, who had a fine match.
In the first encounter of the day, former champions Tata Sports Club of Mumbai made a shock exit, losing 0-1 to Maharashtra State Police.
The match-winner -- a field goal -- was scored in the 14th minute of the second half by Amol Bhosale.
Tatas frittered away nine penalty-corners.
