A 76th minute goal by man of the match Macpherlin Dudu Omagbemi guided Sporting Clube de Goa to a 1-0 victory over Mohun Bagan in the 17th round of the National Football League, at the Nehru stadium in Margao, Goa, on Friday.

The victory enabled Sporting Clube avenge the 0-1 defeat they suffered in the first leg meeting in Kolkata when a penalty goal did them in.

Adebayo Adewusi, who initiated the move, ran down the right flank and on entering the box relayed the ball to Omagbemi, who got the better of defender Edward Chacon and sent it to the far corner of the net to take his tally to 14 goals and remain the highest scorer in the tournament.

Playing a defensive game, Bagan came up with counter moves and had their best chance of scoring in closing stages of the first half, but Mehatab Hussain's 25-yard shot hit the crossbar

With this victory, Sporting brightened their chances of winning the title. They have 35 points from 17 matches, the same as Dempo.

Bagan are placed eighth with 17 points from 17 matches.
