Piyush Kumar and Poonam Tomar (both Indian Railways) won the men's and women's 100 metres to respectively emerge the fastest man and woman in the Open National Athletics Championships in Mumbai on Friday.
Kumar, running in lane two, clocked 10.45 seconds to take the gold, with Sandeep Sarkaria of Delhi (10.57 seconds) and B G Nagaraj of Karnataka (10.66 seconds) finishing second and third respectively.
In the women's 100 metres, Poonam, running in lane one, clocked 11.66 seconds to finish way ahead of Policewoman Rajwinder Kaur (12.08 seconds) and G D Gowremma of Karnataka (12.30 seconds) who had to be content with silver and bronze medals respectively.
In the men's 10-km run, the opening event of the championships, Jagannath Lakade of Services won the gold in a time of 30:45.83 minutes while Chatholi Hamza of Services won the men's 1500 metres, clocking 3:57.56 minutes.
Indian Railways' Maha Singh won the men's long jump gold with a leap of 7.50 metres while Rajesh Babu of All India Police (7.38m) and Ashok Kumar of Tamil Nadu (7.33m) won the silver and bronze respectively.
Though no new national records were set, Indian Railways' Megha Pardeshi came very near to equalling the existing women's javelin throw record of 52.91 metres with a heave of 51.70 metres to win the gold.
Manisha Mondol (48.89metres) and Suman Devi (48.70m) made it a clean sweep for the Railways winning the silver and bronze medals respectively.
