Davenport powers past Molik

Lindsay Davenport powered past Australian Alicia Molik 6-1, 6-0 in her opening match at the Fildsertadt Grand Prix on Wednesday.

Playing her first match since her U.S. Open semi-final defeat by Svetlana Kuznetsova, the 28-year-old American needed just 50 minutes to polish off Molik who needed treatment to her right leg at the end of the first set.

On Tuesday Davenport, who could reclaim the world number one spot this week, said that she is still undecided whether this will be her last year on the circuit.

The biggest shock of the day was the exit of Russia's Elena Dementieva, the fifth seed losing 6-0, 7-5 to Lisa Raymond who only scraped into the tournament when Kim Clijsters withdrew.

Dementieva, who reached the French and U.S. Open finals and won in Belgium last week, earned just one point on her serve in the first set before appearing to turn the match around.

She moved into a 5-3 lead with some trademark baseline hitting but she failed to serve it out at 5-4 and the gutsy Raymond stormed back to clinch victory.

Amelie Mauresmo will play her first match as the world number one when she faces Switzerland's Patty Schnyder on Thursday, while French Open champion Anastasia Myskina is in action against Nathalie Dechy.
