Wimbledon girls' doubles champion Sania Mirza has been granted a wild card for the singles draw at the WTA Grand Prix to be held at Casablanca, Morocco, from April 5 to 11.
According to the tournament organisers, Sania, recognized as one of Asia's most talented young women's tennis players, was given the wild card to "support her endeavour to reach the highest echelons of women's tennis".
With this, the Hyderabad girl becomes the first Indian woman to be given a wild card for a WTA tour event outside the home country, a statement said.
A much-elated Sania said, "I am glad I have received the wild card for this prestigious tournament. I would like to thank the King of Morocco for his personal interest and intervention in the matter.
"My recent victory at the WTA-ING Vysya Hyderabad Open has further strengthened my confidence, determination and focus and I am now sure of playing to the best of my abilities."
In February, Sania won the Boca Raton Classic Women's ITF tennis tournament at Florida, USA.
Later, the same month, she won the doubles title at the Hyderabad Open.
