India's Somdev Varman upset sixth seeded Febi Widhiyanto of Indonesia while Vinod Sridhar got past compatriot Vijay Kannan to move to the quarter-finals of the ONGC ITF Futures tennis tournament at Saturday Club in Kolkata on Thursday.
Varman, a wild card, continued his good form and had little difficulty in outplaying Widhiyanto 7-5, 6-4 in an hour-long tussle.
Somdev, however, faces a tough task tomorrow as he takes on top seed Enev Todor of Bulgaria.
Todor has been displaying menacing form and dismissed his second round challenger Li Tai Wei of Taipei 6-0, 6-0 in just 50 minutes.
The other Indian to qualify for the last eight stage is Sridhar, who had stunned second seeded Orest Tereschuk of Ukraine before beating Vijay Kannan 6-0, 7-6(7-3).
Sridhar faces Noriaku Sugiyama of Japan in the quarter-finals tomorrow.
Indian lad Mustafa Ghouse paid the price for his mistakes as he committed too many unforced errors against Rainer Eitzinger of Austria and lost 4-6, 4-6.
In the doubles category, the Indian duo of Ajay Ramaswami and Sunil Kumar Sipaeya qualified for the semi-finals but Sridhar and Vishal Punna lost in the quarter-final stage.
Ghouse and Vishal Uppal also moved to the pre-summit round.
