England want to wear black armbands during their Euro 2004 quarter-final against Portugal on Thursday in memory of the fan who was stabbed and killed when he chased a pickpocket, a team spokesman says.

Stephen Smith, 28, a mechanic from Wolverhampton, England, was stabbed in the heart near Lisbon's Rossio Square where fans attending the European Championship congregate.

A 31-year-old Ukrainian man was arrested after the incident and ordered into preventive detention by a judge.

Thousands of England fans were in Lisbon for Monday night's match in which their team beat Croatia 4-2 to reach the quarter-final, which is also in the Portuguese capital.
