Buoyed by its successful bid for the 2010 Commonwealth Games, the Indian Olympic Association announced on Monday it would enter the fray to host the 2016 Olympics.
The decision to bid for the world's biggest sporting extravaganza, with Delhi as host city, was taken at the Executive Council and Annual General Meeting of the IOA in Delhi on Sunday.
"The house unanimously decided to bid for the 2016 Olympics Games to be hosted in Delhi," IOA secretary-general Randhir Singh said in a statement.
The meeting, which was chaired by IOA president Suresh Kalmadi, also decided that "in future, three consecutive National Games would be allotted to the bidding states".
Accordingly, it allotted the 2007 National Games to Jharkhand and 2009 to Uttar Pradesh.
"With regard to the National Winter Games, a similar procedure will be adopted and the Games will be allotted in the next Annual General Meeting."
The first National Youth Games, which was originally scheduled to be held this month in Bangalore, will be held in November at the same venue.
An earlier decision on affiliation of the Nagaland Olympic Association was ratified at the meeting.
The Wushu Federation of India was granted provisional affiliation and the India Blind Sports Association was given recognition, the statement said.
