East Punjab registered an emphatic 3-0 win over West Punjab in a hockey match held as part of the first Indo-Pak Punjab Games in Jalandhar on Thursday.
Playing attacking hockey from the very beginning, the hosts went ahead in the third minute when star striker Gagan Ajit Singh scored off a pass from Baljit Singh Saini.
West went close to restoring parity two minutes later when they threatened with a penalty corner but in the end failed to make use of the set piece.
East then forced a penalty corner in the 12th minute but skipper Baljit Singh Dhillon's powerful shot narrowly missed the mark.
The Punjab team from Pakistan got two more close chances before the break but failed to penetrate the strong East Punjab defence.
Changing ends, the hosts doubled the lead at the beginning of the second half when Deepak Thakur scored off a deflection.
After wasting two more penalty corners in the 43rd and 47th minutes, East put the match beyond their rivals' reach with their third goal in the dying minutes through Prabhjot Singh.
