They may not be hot medal prospects at the Athens Olympics, but the Indian shuttlers are hoping against hope to make a mark in the competition with some spirited performances.

If for first-timer Nikhil Kanetkar representing the country in the Olympics is in itself a "dream come true", Aparna Popat, who played in the Sydney Olympics, wants to grab the opportunity with both hands.

"I never thought I will qualify for the Olympics," Kantekar told reporters in Delhi on Monday night.

"I came close to qualifying last time as well but was terribly disappointed after failing to make the grade. But this time it's so far so good for me as I would be playing against the best of the best in the Games," said the 25-year-old, who became the third Indian shuttler to secure a berth after Popat and Abhinn Shyam Gupta.

While Popat gained a direct entry, both Gupta and Kanetkar qualified after some of those in the draw pulled out at the last moment. Kanetkar's entry was confirmed just a fortnight ago, on July 18.

Did the last-moment entry affect his preparations in any way?

"Certainly not, since we play almost throughout the year. Moreover, I did some special training in the last few months hoping that lady luck may smile on me this time," he said.

Popat, who has some Olympic experience, having featured in the Sydney Games, is all focussed about the job at hand.

"I did not expect a place in Sydney but this time around was sure. So I am much more prepared than last time. I think I have a chance."

The 23rd-ranked player in the world said it is a good sign that the country is sending "a good number of shuttlers" to Athens.

"It's good to see that. It's like generating team spirit at the biggest sporting event."

Aparna said she hopes all the three Indian participants do well in the Games.

"We know winning a medal is always difficult. But we are carrying the hopes of so many people, it will definitely spur us."
