Third seed Chin Bee Khoo of Malaysia and eighth seed Sonal Phadke were shown the door while fourth seed Shikha Uberoi of USA was given a scare by an rank-outsider in the second round of the Bank of Baroda ITF Women's Tennis tournament in New Delhi on Wednesday.
Khoo could never find her feet in the sweltering heat at the DLTA Stadium complex and went down to unseeded Wilawan Choptang of Thailand 2-6, 2-6.
Phadke also met with the same fate although she managed to put up a better performance in the first set against Jie Hao of China in her 4-6, 1-6 defeat.
In fact the Indian had the better start of the two breaking her opponent in the very first game of the match. But she failed to maintain consistency to lose the initiative.
Meanwhile, Uberoi had to rally from a one-set deficit to pull off a hard-fought victory against qualifier Lizaan Du Plessis of South Africa 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Uberoi, who was given a wild card in this tournament, was a bit circumspect in her movements in the initial stages of the match but as the match progressed, made use of all her experience to down left-handed opponent.
In the other matches, top seed Chia-Jung Chuang of Chinese Taipei defeated qualifier Shu-Jing Yang of China 6-0, 7-5 while second seed Rushmi Chakravarthy thrashed Stephanie Greau of France 6-4, 6-1.
