Mohun Bagan won the 2003 IFA Shield, beating ASEAN club champions East Bengal 5-3 in a penalty shootout, in the final, at Kolkata on Sunday.
After normal time ended goalless, Bagan converted all their kicks in the penalty shoot-out, while M Suresh missed for East Bengal. His kick, East Bengal's fourth, was saved by goalkeeper Prasanta Dora.
Jose Barretto, Palash Karmakar, Mehtab Hussain, Sunil Chetri and Lolendro Singh scored for Bagan, while only Suleh Musah, Bijen Singh, Soor Kumar Singh were on target for East Bengal.
Bagan, who won the premier tournament for 20th time -- after a lapse of three years, did well to hold East Bengal goalless in the first 90 minutes and half-an-hour of extra-time.
The match could well have ended in extra-time had East Bengal striker Bijen Singh been able to capitalise on one of the easiest chances of the day and score the golden goal.
East Bengal, down to ten men after the expulsion of substitute Alvito D'Cunha in the second half of extra-time, got the chance, when Bijen, fed by a long through pass from the middle, got past Bagan defender Sanjib Maria and raced into the box all alone.
However, he failed to control the ball even as Bagan keeper Dora, who advanced, failed to make a clean collection.
