Maintaining its medal-winning spree, India raised its tally to 15, including four gold, on the penultimate day of the Asian Kayaking and Canoeing championships in Bhopal on Friday, while China remained on top with 22 medals.

India's energetic rower Wamutombi bagged the gold medal in C-1 500 metres junior men's category at the Boat Club, pushing behind China's Chen Zhijiang and Motaguchi Takashi of Japan to second and third places respectively.

For India, equally spellbinding was the KT-2500 metres senior men's event, in which Naveen Sahu and A Machariya snatched the gold after a spectacular performance.

India maintained its fourth position at the end of the third day's events, adding seven medals to its tally in the four-day sporting extravaganza.

However, reigning champions China continue to maintain overall superiority with 15 gold medals in their basket, though they lag behind Japan and Iran in the medal count.

The Chinese top the list with 22 medals, including 15 gold, three silver and four bronze, followed by Japan (26 medals - 11 gold, seven silver and eight bronze).

The Japanese added six gold, three silver and four bronze medals in today's competitions.

Iran, runners-up in the last championships, are in third spot with seven gold, 14 silver and four bronze.

True to expectations of Indian coach U R Abhyan, who assisted Hungary's Gyongyyosi Jonas in training the team, the hosts won two more gold, a silver and three bronze medals today to swell their medal count to 15.

India's D V S Negi, who made history yesterday by winning gold in K-1 1000 metres junior men category, today bagged silver in K-1 class 500 metres for junior men.

In fifth place in the medal tally is Indonesia, who won three silvers and bronze medals each to make their total count shoot to 13 from seven yesterday.

Chinese Taipei and Iraq added four silver and a bronze respectively to their overnight tally.

Out of the 11 countries participating in the championship, Hong Kong and Singapore have not yet been able to open their account.

Out of a total of 47 events, 39 have been completed so far and the remaining eight will be decided on the closing day, tomorrow.
