Leeds United and England striker Alan Smith has left the England squad after his arrest over an alleged bottle-throwing incident during a League Cup match against Manchester United last month.
Smith, who was called into the national squad just a few hours earlier for Sunday's friendly against Denmark as a replacement for Darius Vassell, was questioned by police and later released on bail.
The forward withdrew from the squad in Manchester following Football Association discussions about his police interview.
"Further to discussions this evening, Alan Smith has left the England squad and returned to Leeds," Football Association spokesman Adrian Bevington said.
"We will be issuing a full statement on Friday morning."
Earlier on Thursday, a West Yorkshire police spokeswoman said: "A 23-year-old man was arrested by officers...in Leeds today and questioned in relation to an alleged incident at the Leeds United versus Manchester United fixture on October 28.
"He was questioned and released on police bail to return to a police station at a later date. A file will be sent to the Crown Prosecution Service for consideration."
Near the end of Leeds's 3-2 League Cup third round defeat by Manchester United television pictures showed Smith picking up a plastic bottle thrown by a supporter in the West Stand.
Smith threw it back off the pitch. He later apologised to a young female who was in the stands.
