Orissa won the 34th junior national women's hockey championship defeating Jharkhand 4-3 in a penalty shoot out in Pune on Sunday.

No goals were scored in the first half, but Orissa took the lead after the breather when L Basanti shot a field goal in the 53rd minute.

Jharkhand scored the equaliser ten minutes later through Amrita Minz.

Both the teams missed several opportunities to break the deadlock in the extra time though they received four penalty corners each.

In the penalty shootout, Binita, Sumitra and Basanti scored for Orissa while Jharkhand's Seting B and captain Susheela converted their strokes.

Orissa won the event when goalkeeper Pushpanjali came up with a brilliant effort to stop K Nilima's shot.

Earlier playing for the third position, Haryana beat Uttar Pradesh by a solitary goal scored by Kanupriya.

Asuntal Lakra of Jharkhand bagged the best player award for her performance in the championship while the best defender award went to Manjiri of Uttar Pradesh and the best forward was Poonam Singh of UP.

Guddikumari and Amruta Minz of Jharkhand were joint top scorers.
