Mohammedan Sporting began their campaign on a winning note, edging past Wari AC 1-0 in a Kolkata Super Division football league match on Tuesday.
The match at the Salt Lake stadium was played under heavy rain. Mohammedan Sporting scored the all-important goal in the 20th minute when Khaled Siddiqui capitalised on a defensive lapse by the opposing goalkeeper.
Siddiqui's innocuous centre changed direction as it deflected off Wari custodian Nasibul Haque's hands and entered the goal, much to the surprise of the spectators at the stadium.
Sporting were clearly the dominant side, particularly in the first-half, with their medio Bungo Singh, playing a stellar role.
The Wari players played their hearts out after the breather, but were unable to restore parity.
Wari suffered their second successive defeat in as many games.
