Indian doubles specialist Mahesh Bhupathi [ Images ] and partner Max Mirnyi [ Images ] defeated fourth seeds Jonas Bjorkman [ Images ] and Todd Woodbridge 6-3, 7-6(4) in the final of Tennis Masters Canada [ Images ] in Montreal on Sunday and captured their third title of 2003.
In this repeat of this year's Wimbledon [ Images ] final, Bhupathi-Mirnyi denied Woodbridge the opportunity to claim his 77th doubles title and tie John McEnroe [ Images ] for second place in the Open Era titles list.
In a close match, the top seeds managed to win against the experienced Swedish-Aussie pairing after a rain delay in the first set. The big push from Bhupathi and Mirnyi came in the second set tiebreaker, where they found themselves down 0-3 after losing two points on their serve. They quickly turned the tables and won 7 of the next eight points to win the match and the title.
This was Bhupathi-Mirnyi's second Tennis Masters Series shield this season following Tennis Masters Monte Carlo, where they defeated Michael Llodra and Fabrice Santoro [ Images ] in the final. Bhupathi, who won the Canada title with Leander Paes [ Images ] in 1997, now sports a total of 29 career titles, while Mirnyi has 17.
