India's Federation Cup player Megha Vakharia stormed into the semi-finals of the Rockingham Heritage Bank ITF tournament at Harrisonburg, the United States, with a hard-earned victory over eighth seed Mayumi Yamamoto of Japan.
The 18-year-old Indian, ranked 548 on the WTA rankings, beat the 591-ranked Japanese 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 in the quarter-finals.
Vakharia had accounted for Nicole Shabaz of the US 6-4, 6-4 in the first round, while in the pre-quarter-finals, she beat another home player, Courtney Vernon, 6-4, 6-2.
In the semi-finals tomorrow, Vakharia will meet the winner of the match between second seed Jacqueline Trail of the US and Tomoya Takagishi of Japan.
At the Denver ATP Challenger in the US, the Indo-Pak pair of Rohan Bopanna and Aisam Quereshi moved into the final of the doubles event. They beat the US pair of Doug Bohaboy/Jack Brasington 2-6, 7-5, 7-6(5).
