Narrow win for women's
hockey team

India began their campaign in the women's hockey competition at the Commonwealth Games, beating Canada 1-0 on Friday.

The only goal of the match came from a penalty-corner, when Suman Bala deflected the ball into Canada's goal in the 44th minute.

The victory earned India three points and put them atop Pool-B, as the first match of the group, between England and New Zealand ended in a 2-2 draw.

The final scoreline does not reflect the total dominance that India enjoyed. But for some poor finishing and bad luck, the margin of victory could have been much higher.

India made 13 attempts at the opposition's goal while Canada managed just two.

Several shots on Canada's post, by Jyoti Sunita Kullu and Pritam Rani Siwach, who shone for India, brought all efforts to a nought. India also squandered four penalty-corners.
