A famous French victory
France won their ninth Davis Cup title, joining Britain in third place on the all-time list, behind the United States with 31 and Australia with 27.
But the win did not come easy. Patrick Rafter (L), who had been due to play Escude in the deciding singles, had to pull out an hour before the start of the decider after aggravating an arm injury in the doubles
Australia came into the third day trailing France 1-2. Lleyton Hewitt was first going to try and level the scores.
