kishen Kumar granted bail

Kishen Kumar, one of the main accused in the match-fixing scandal, was today granted interim anticipatory bail till April 25 by the Delhi high court on an application filed by Delhi police for his remand.

Kumar is currently lodged in Tihar jail. He was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on charges of allegedly violating provisions of the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act for certain transactions through hawala channels.

On April 15, metropolitan magistrate Swarn Lata Mehra held a special court in a room of Apollo Indraprastha Hospital where Kumar was undergoing treatment for heart ailment. She remanded him to 14-day judicial custody, and directed the ED to produce him before her on April 29, the next date of hearing.

The ED sought the constitution of a panel of doctors of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences to assess the nature of his illness. The panel ultimately certified that Kumar can be treated medically and need not be hospitalised. He was sent to Tihar on April 18.

The arrest of Kumar by the ED under sections eight and nine of FERA came after Delhi police had failed to interrogate him for his alleged involvement in the match-fixing case. Police unsuccessfully tried thrice to interrogate him in a Noida nursing home, but failed due to his being medically unfit.

Following an application moved by Delhi police (crime branch) for a remand, the lower court had issued a production warrant against Kumar for his appearance today afternoon. Justice MSA Siddiqui of the high court, however, granted him an interim anticipatory bail till April 25.
