Dalmiya to chew Cronje with BCCI chief

Zakia Maryam in Calcutta

International Cricket Council chairman Jagmohan Dalmiya has summoned Board of Control for Cricket in India chief A C Mutaiah to Calcutta on April 18.

In a telephone interview to rediff.com his south Calcutta office, Dalmiya said his meeting with Mutaiah was primarily to discuss the BCCI's stance over the betting scandal involving Hansie Cronje that has rocked the world of cricket.

"Since the whole match-fixing episode revolves around India and Indian bookies, it is imperative for me as an ICC chief to know what steps the BCCI has taken so far. I will also be discussing the Indian board's future course of actions in this regard," Dalmiya said.

Questioned on the damage the incident has done to the image of Indian cricket, Dalmiya said that cricket would not stop to be considered as a great game merely because Cronje had accepted money.

"Let's not draw the conclusion in haste that cricket is no more a name of gentleman's game in India," Dalmiya remarked.

He refused an answer to whether he would request Mutaiah to make public the Justice Chandrachud Committee's findings.
