Indo-pak summit 2001

At the best of times, relations between India and Pakistan have been tense. On a few occasions in the recent past, there has been a spurt of optimism about improving ties and laying old ghosts to rest, only for the illusion to be shattered by subsequent events.

Now, once again, Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee has tried to make a break with the past and taken the bold step of inviting Chief Executive Pervez Musharraf of Pakistan, architect of the Kargil conflict, to a peace summit.

General Musharraf has reacted favourably to the idea. But will he be able to make a decisive break for peace? Will this summit yield anything tangible to the two countries and the troubled state of Jammu & Kashmir? Will the extremists in both countries, especially Pakistan, give peace a chance? Or will we see history repeating itself, a few moments of euphoria followed by a long spell of hostility?
