Director Rajiv Rai shot at, escapes unhurt

Bollywood director Rajiv Rai and his bodyguard escaped an attack on him by five assailants belonging to the Abu Salem gang at Tardeo in central Bombay on Thursday evening.

Rai, director of this month's hit Gupt, was coming out of his office at Commerce Centre at 5.15 pm when the assailants drove up and began firing at him.

Rai's bodyguard, provided to him recently by the city police following threats to his life, fired back, injuring one of the assailants. The injured man, Mohammed Hanif Bin Mohammed Sheikh, has been admitted to the Nair hospital in central Bombay, sources said.

The police has registered a case of attempt to murder. Efforts are on to trace the other assailants, who escaped.

Rajiv Rai was not available for comment. His family too declined to discuss the matter.
