13 cops hurt as Naxals set off mines in AP

At least 13 policemen were injured, three of them seriously, when members of the banned People's War Group set off mines near Gudimettlagutta in Karimnagar district in Andhra Pradesh on Monday.

According to official sources, the three seriously injured policemen were being brought to Hyderabad for treatment while the rest were admitted to the government hospital at Godavarikhani.

A group of 20 policemen, led by an assistant sub-inspector, was walking back after combining the remote areas near Manthani Mutharam on Sunday night, when 40 Naxalites set off the mines. The policemen and the Naxalites exchanged fire, the sources added.

This is the second major attack on policemen by the PWG in the last 48 hours. Seven policemen were killed when their jeep was blown up in a landmine blast at Annavaram in Visakhapatnam district on Friday.
