Paramilitary central reserve police force troopers allegedly killed a village carpenter in the Kheegam village of south Kashmir Pulwama district late Wednesday evening.

The CRPF troopers of 181 battalion were on an evening patrol in the village when the incident occurred.

A spokesman of the paramilitary CRPF, however, maintained that the CRPF patrol had been shot at in the village, upon which they returned the fire, killing one person.

The villagers asserted that the carpenter was killed in the firing by the CRPF and that there had been no encounter in the village between the security forces and the militants.

Tension has gripped the village in the wake of the carpenters killing and villagers held massive protests and were refusing to bury the body.

Senior police and paramilitary officers are at the spot.
