The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam on Monday appealed to the United Nations to investigate possible war crimes by the Sri Lankan Army and said it has 'plenty of evidence' to prove its claim.

But the Tamil Tigers made no mention of the UN's allegations that the LTTE may also be committing war crimes by killing innocent civilians in the ongoing offensive.

"The Sri Lankan government is carrying out genocidal massacres by deliberately targeting civilians, their humanitarian supplies and the hospitals," LTTE political head B Nadesan said.

He said shells have been fired by the Sri Lanka Army in the close vicinity of Puthumaaththalan hospital in the Wanni region. However, the government rejected the allegations by the Tamil Tigers and said those were not true.

"We deny the charges. The LTTE is responsible for killing Tamil civilians in the areas held by them," a government official said.

Pro-LTTE website TamilNet.com quoted Nadesan as saying, "Civilians are forcibly uprooted, separated and jailed inside barbed wire internment camps. Hundreds of civilians have gone missing in SLA controlled territories and in the South."
