Deputy Superintendent of Police K G Erda was arrested on Sunday in connection with a 2002 Gujarat riots case by Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigation Team.
Erda, who is at present serving as Deputy Superintendent of Police in Valsad district, was posted at Meghaninagar police station at the time of 2002 Gulbargh society riots in which ex-Congress MP Ehsaan Jafri and around 35 other people were killed by rioters.
SIT chief RK Raghavan said that his team had arrested Erda in connection with the 2002 Gulbarg society riot case.
Erda was posted at Meghaninagar police station during the 2002 riots and was incharge of the Gulbarg case, SIT member, Joint Commissioner of Police, Ashish Bhatia said
Erda, who was recently interrogated by the SIT, was arrested from Valsad district, sources in the SIT said.
The SIT has filed over 2000-page chargesheet in the Metropolitan court in the Gulbarg case which names 14 accused
and lists 21 absconders, including some local leaders associated with the saffron outfits like the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bharatiya Janata Party.
The chargesheet names ex-municipal councillor from BJP Chunilal Prajapati and sitting councillor Bipin Patel who are
also absconders in the case. It also has statements of 567 people who are either eye witnesses or survivors of the attack.The chargesheet filed in 2002 had named 46 accused in
the case.
