Two motorcyclists were run over by an unidentified car in Gorakhpur on Friday night, which locals alleged belonged to the cavalcade of Bhojpuri actor Manoj Tiwari.
According to the police, Rajkumar Gupta and Pintu of Sangrampur village were crushed by the speeding car near Jarlahi bridge.
The bodies of the duo were found by villagers soon after the accident. Claiming that a car in the motorcade of Tiwari killed the two, angry villagers held a demonstration till 2.30 am and relented only after the police assured them about a fair inquiry into the incident.
Senior Superintendent of Police R K Srivastava said the identity of the vehicle has not been established yet but the investigation is on, adding that the bodies have been sent for post-mortem.
Reacting to the allegations, Tiwari, the Samajwadi Party candidate from Gorakhpur Sadar Parliamentary seat, said, "These allegations are baseless. This is a political conspiracy against my growing fame in Gorakhpur".
"Everyone including the media has seen that during the roadshow, my car follows the police jeep. So if my car had caused the accident, it could have been stopped or the media would have telecasted it," he was quoted as telling TV channels.
