Assam: Rape allegations rock CRPF

Allegation of rape of two married women by CRPF men on duty at Bhalukmari village under Rowta outpost of communal-violence affected Udalguri district of North Assam has fuelled fresh tension in the area much to the woes of the administration that is trying hard to restore normalcy in the riot-hit areas.

The two women were allegedly raped by a few CRPF jawans from a patrol party in a paddy field at the village on Monday afternoon, triggering vociferous protests from civil society groups. The police on the basis of an FIR lodged by locals registered a case and sent the two women for medical examination at the nearby Civil Hospital at Mangaldoi  in Darrang district. The medical examination report is expected tomorrow.

A senior official of the district informed that the two women would be produced before a judicial magistrate for recording their statements while an identification parade was being eld tomorrow to help the women identify their tormentors in uniform.

Vice-president of the All Bodo Students' Union (ABSU), Promode Bodo informed that said from Udalguri that one woman was outraged while she was harvesting paddy in her field and the other woman was raped at her residence after the jawans had beaten up her husband.

Meanwhile, locals blocked the National Highway 52 at Rowta for abouit an hour today 45 demanding arrests of the culprits involved in the rape of two married women. Hundreds of villagers also assembled at the Rowta police outpost and raised slogans for about three hours demanding immediate arrest.
