Over a dozen persons were injured in fresh incidents of violence in parts of Srinagar, forcing the authorities to re-impose undeclared curfew restrictions in old city.
Police said violence erupted in the Nowhatta locality of the old city which spread to others parts soon this morning which led to closure of shops with traffic deserting the streets.
As the violence intensified in the old city, police initially tried to disperse the mobs using tear gas and batons.
However, as the mobs swelled and pelting intensified in old city parts, police opened fire at Khankahi Maulla injuring a youth who was hospitalized for treatment.
The state authorities who had this morning withdrawn curfew restrictions in old city, later decided to re-impose undeclared curfew in areas falling under the jurisdiction of Nowhatta and Khanyar police stations.
Heavy deployment of paramilitary, central reserve police force (CRPF) and police were moved into the old city areas to enforce strict security restrictions.
Police said over a dozen persons including two CRPF troopers were wounded in the police-protestor clashes Sunday.
Old city areas have been tense since Friday afternoon when the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh arrived here on a two-day visit.
Violence that followed resulted in the killing of two youth in police and paramilitary firing late Friday afternoon in Nowhatta locality.
