As Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh threatened withdrawal of support to the UPA government over the Jamia Nagar encounter, party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav on Tuesday said the support was extended in the national interest and there was no question of its withdrawal.
Talking to reporters here, he also exuded confidence that the Samajwadi Party and the Congress would reach an understanding on seat-sharing for the ensuing Lok Sabha poll in Uttar Pradesh within 10 days.
The support to the UPA government was extended in the national interest after due consideration and there was no question of its withdrawal, Yadav said.
Earlier in Panaji in Goa, Amar Singh said if a judicial probe showed that those killed in the Jamia Nagar shootout were innocent, "then we (the SP) can think of withdrawing support to the UPA goverment".
"Shoot them if they are terrorists. But if they are innocent, then they should be given justice," he told a press conference.
Yadav backed Amar Singh's demand for a judicial inquiry into the encounter saying whatever he was saying was also the view of the party.
"I have personally talked to him and he says he has not issued any statement on withdrawal of support. He says it is merely a figment of imagination of the media," Yadav said.
The former UP Chief Minister said the judicial probe would bring out the truth in the Jamia shootout case.
On the contentious seat-sharing issue, he said the two parties would reach an understanding within 10 days.
