Yet another fake degree racket may soon be unravelled in Bihar with the disappearance of 242 blank Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) degree certificates from B N Mandal university, Madhepura.

BNMU vice chancellor has placed R K P Suman, the examination controller who was the custodian of degrees, under suspension and lodged an FIR with the police apprehending that these certificates could be used to dishonestly secure jobs in various teaching institutions.

"I have ordered the immediate cancellation of all the missing degrees and we will put out advertisements in newspapers with the serial numbers of the certificates that have disappeared to alert educational institutions so that the unscrupulous elements who might have got hold of these through dishonest means could be prevented from landing jobs," BNMU vice chancellor R P Srivastava told PTI.

Srivastava said he had received several phone calls during the last one month regarding clandestine sale of B.Ed degrees for Rs 80,000 to Rs one lakh.

Srivastava said a four-member committee, headed by the dean of student welfare and also including the proctor and dean of social sciences, was constituted some time ago to go into the complaints and during investigation it found that 242 blank degrees--147 in Hindi and 95 in English--had gone missing.

Suman was placed under suspension on September 28 and FIR was lodged immediately thereafter, he said, adding while the police investigation would unravel the entire truth, the university also proposed to initiate departmental proceedings against the examination controller.

The BNMU vice chancellor said though Suman claimed innocence, he had never brought to his notice the disappearance of the certificates or mentioned names of persons, who he suspected were behind the theft.

"After all, not not one person can single-handedly run such a racket. I hope the police inquiry will reveal the truth," Srivastava said.

Srivastava said even while the probe by the committee was on, four B.Ed degree certificates were received from some institutions from outside the state for verification which were found to be "patently fake".
