A Hyderabad court acquitted three accused in the murder of Indian Police Service officer K S Vyas following lack of evidence.
Vyas, who was the deputy inspector general of police of the elite anti-naxal squad 'Greyhounds,' was shot dead while jogging inside the Lal Bahadur Stadium in the heart of the city in on January 25, 1993.
A 20-strong gang of suspected naxalites, wearing masks, attacked the police officer and shot him dead from close range.
One of Vyas' colleagues V Dinesh Reddy, now the managing director of the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation, was a key witness in the case as he was also jogging in the stadium at the time of the incident.
Many of the accused in the case were killed in police encounters over the years while six were still at large. One of the main accused Mekala Damodar Reddy died during the course of the trial.
The prosecution produced three of the accused in the court for the judgment today but failed to establish their guilt.
