Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad inaugrated an FM station in the hinterland of Ladakh, which will enable the reach of the world's highest radio station to Khalsi, Nyoma and Dikshit of the cold desert region.
The radio station is perched at an altitude of 11, 800 ft above sea level in the Leh town of Ladakh region.
Commissioning the FM and satellite uplink station, Azad called for further improvement to cover the shadow areas in the region where television and radio signals were not received due to geographical constraints.
He said that radio was an effective medium of communication and the inauguration of FM station was a boon for the young generation as it was a craze with the youth all over the country.
"The popularity of FM transmission had transcended boundaries of popularity and the youth have a special connection with these transmissions. Leh district enjoys unique distinction among the mountainous areas where the youth are taking to education in large numbers."
The CEO, Prasar Bharati, B S Lalli described the launch of satellite uplink and FM transmitter as an auspicious occasion for the people of Leh.
He said a big production studio of Doordarshan would be soon inaugurated in Leh, which would promote Ladakhi culture and language. He said new transmitters would be set up in shadow areas to enhance the reach of radio broadcast.
