"Civilian killings are down by three times. As many as 187 people were killed this year till May 20 as against 289 killed in 2007 for the same period," police officials told PTI.

Thirty civilians were killed between January 1 and May 20, 2008, as against 90 civilian killings in 2007 for the same period, they said quoting a militancy data.

"However, there has been an increase in small level militant attacks in the state this year. There have been militant attacks at Samba, Tandghar, Tarkundi, Bwlnoie, Poonch and Kupwara sectors," they said.

In 2006, as many as 441 people including 158 civilians, 58 security force personnel and policemen and 225 militants were killed during a period of five months.
