In an unexpected turn of events, the state government on Monday cancelled the swearing in ceremony of B R Kundal, who resigned as chief secretary of Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday to join the Ghulam Nabi Azad-led coalition government.
A message stating 'Raj Bhavan swearing ceremony scheduled for this afternoon stands cancelled' was conveyed to the media in Srinagar on Monday morning.
Though no reasons were given for the last minute cancellation, sources said that the cancellation was due to the internal resentment among Congress cadres, who were against the induction of Kundal into the cabinet.
Some senior Congress leaders from Jammu reportedly threatened to resign from the party to protest against Kundal's induction into the cabinet.
Even the ruling People's Democratic Party patron and former chief minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed is believed to have expressed his dismay over his party being ignored about the decision to induct Kundal. The sources say that Chief Minister Azad decided to induct Kundal into the state cabinet.
